The Wales Road Casualty Reduction Partnership is dedicated to educating and engaging with all ages about road safety and use a wide range of methods to get the message across. They include the following:
Roadside Education
A Speed Indicator Device (SID) or Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) can be placed outside schools in peak times to alert drivers of their speed as well as being a great interactive tool to engage with children. An example of how we use the SID is when a driver is exceeding the speed limit the SID sign displays an unhappy face and children boo the driver. When a driver is within the limit, the SID smiles and the children cheer the drivers. This activity is often followed by classroom based activities about road safety. We use a number of different types of VAS and SID throughout Wales.
SID and VAS are also effective on any roadside. With the help of Police Officers, drivers exceeding the speed limit are stopped and educated by our education officers about the dangers and consequences of their actions.
Visits/ Presentations
Our education officers are also very proactive with children/ young drivers and professional drivers. Their engagement techniques vary from the use of an interactive driving game to a more personal approach of a discussion in a classroom or office. They visit numerous educational establishments, youth clubs and companies who employ drivers.
Communities
The officers also engage widely with their communities on a daily basis and often attend community meetings and local events.
